Is an action good because God commands it, or does God command it because it is inherently good? If something is good simply because God commands it, then morality becomes arbitrary; if God were to command violence, that violence would instantly become "good." On the other hand, if God is merely reporting a standard of goodness that exists independently, then God is not the ultimate author of morality, and we are left once again searching for the origin of that independent standard.
